Johann “John” Ludwig Mielke

As a continuation of my Amanuensis Monday post, I’m going to talk about my great-great grandfather Johann “John” Ludwig Mielke.

I don’t have a lot information about him before he and his wife came to America. I know that he was born on 20 Dec 1841 in Prussia.  In 1867, he married Augusta Fredrica Strauss. In 1868, their daughter Elisa Sophia baptized at Sankt, Katharinen, Danzig, Stadt, West Preussen, Prussia.

 1880 Census

In 1880, they were living on Warren Avenue in Big Rapids, Mecosta, Michigan. Mielke was misspelled “Mealke”. There children listed here are: Charles this was actually Carl (born in 1873 ), Conrad (born in 1874), George (born in 1877), twins Walter and Voleska (born in 1879). It also states that John and Augusta and their parents were born in Prussia and all the children were born in Michigan. Note that in this census Elesa Sofia is missing. She would have been about 12 years old during this census, so I’m thinking that she possibly died sometime before this census was taken.

 1900 Census

In the 1900 census, the family was living in Norwich Township, Newaygo, Michigan. In this census only Karrl (Carl) and Conrad were living with their parents. Augusta had 9 children but only 5 were living by this time. They owned their own farm and son Conrad was working for the family. It also shows that son Karrl was “Idiotic” and that everyone except for him could read, write, and speak English.

I know out of the 9 children they had 5 were living by 1900, Carl, Conrad, George, Walter, and Martha (born in 1882). Also according to this census it states that John and Augusta immigrated to the US in 1872 and that John was a naturalized citizen.

1910 Census

In the 1910 census, they were still living in Norwich, Newaygo,  Michigan and children Carl and Conrad were still living with them.  I can’t completely make out what was written in the parent’s birth places other than Germany.

On 7 Mar 1912, John died in Norwich at the age of 70. According to Family Search’s Death Record his father’s name was Carl. He was buried at Highland View Cemetery, Big Rapids, Michigan.

Happy Searching!!
